I want to show you a WordPress plugin I wrote, that uses a proven type of scarcity to increase sales and conversions for anyone selling products or doing affiliate marketing.

I got inspired to create this plugin a few days ago when I was visiting Expedia and looking for a flight / hotel to go to Hawaii in January (I’m not a big fan of NE winters). While I was on the site, I was looking at a package deal and there was red text under it that said “8 people are viewing this hotel right now”. I realized that this is a kind of scarcity. What they where telling me is that basically: “Hey other people are interested, if you dont book this hotel right now, you might miss out”.

Thinking about it this kind of ‘social scarcity’ is all around us. In fact not long ago I was considering a new investment property. When I was looking at it, my agent out of now where said “Just so you know, a couple other people looked at this in the last week”. What she was trying to say is “Hey Brett, other people are interested, so if you don’t put in an offer right now you might lose this opportunity”. Incidentally I did put in an offer right then and there, and I bought it.

I realized that this kind of scarcity could be great for online marketing as well. We have all seen dime sales. Where the buy button says something like “Only 2 more for sale at: $9.97”. Thats a really common type of scarcity. But its also empty scarcity because the site visitor does not know if anyone is even considering this offer. Imagine how much more powerful the urgency to buy would be if you said “Only 2 more for sale at: $9.97” and also said “There are 15 people viewing this page right now”. Now thats urgency!

Or what about affiliate marketing? What if you where giving away a bonus for people who buy through your link and said. “For the first 50 people only”, and then also showed them the number of real live people considering that offer?

It would even work for list building, how about giving away a free gift in exchange for the optin, but also saying “To the first 100 people only” .. and then show the number of people on the page, getting ready to take advantage of the free optin offer.

This is a unique kind of scarcity because its scarcity that is provided by your site visitors. Its real life scarcity that drives home the urgency to the site visitor. It says: “If you dont act now, someone else will”. It gives them the very real sense that they might lose out to someone else. This urgency will inevitably lead to one outcome. Better conversions.

Now I found a lot of WordPress visitor counter plugins that showed the number of people who have visited your site. But that’s not really going to help. What we need is a plugin that will show, in real time, the number of people currently viewing a specific page. Since I could not find an existing one. I wrote one myself. Also since I was going to write it anyway, since I wanted it, I figured why not give it away to everyone for free? So thats what I decided to do.

Click below to download this plugin 100% for free as my gift to you. The only thing I ask is that you shoot me a like, +1 or a Tweet, which ever you prefer.

A quick note about the reviews I do on this site. The product vendors give me access to their products for free in order for me to do my review. However I make no promises to them regarding the results of my tests or what I will write in my review. Should you click a link that takes you to a sales page for a paid product for sale this link will be an affiliate link and I will be paid a percentage of the sales price should you decide to invest in it.

    Hi Brett

Being on the other side of the globe I have the privilege of being the first to thank you for your generosity. Very perceptive to note that subtle difference in scarcity. To add a bit more spice, in the gold version, could you quote in real time the number of people as opposed to those that take the next step ( buy, optin etc ). This ratio could be being collected in the background and switched on, or left off, when appropriate.

When you show astuteness like giving it away Is it any wonder that your able to afford investment properties.

Have a good break in Jan. Cheers

  20. Mike, 23 November, 2015

    Thank you Brett

I wanted to say thank you for your generosity. I am really looking forward to implementing this plugin. No doubt it will be great as is all of your other products.

I also want to say that it is so very great there is at least one person who is honest and genuine in IM! Please don’t change.

Here you go again…proving me right again! πŸ˜‰

  50. Brian, 23 November, 2015

Thanks Brett, you ROCK. Happy Thanksgiving!

  51. Ted, 23 November, 2015

Thank you Brett! I get it now.
It may just be me, but I could not find the scarcity banner. I was looking for it in the body of the page, like the Expedia example. Maybe I’m just too focused on reading content to look at the very bottom or top of a page.
Anyway, I feel greedy asking this, considering it is a gift, but because of my above experience, any chance of having an option to make it a banner that could be strategically placed elsewhere on a page? A place of our choosing? Under a buy button as an example, or like they have it placed in Expedia?
Fine if you don’t have the time, no problem. Do appreciate the “gift”, Brett, no matter what because it is a great idea for scarcity.

  52. Brett Rutecky, 23 November, 2015

Hmm its an interesting person who gets something for free, and then complains its not the way they want it, while asking for more.

  53. Ted, 23 November, 2015

Really didn’t want to come across like that. Based on my tunnel vision experience and hoping it would be accepted as a worthy suggestion.

  54. Joe, 23 November, 2015

I did not read what Ted said anything close to what you have. I did read that he was appreciative of the plugin and that it took him awhile to find the banner at the bottom of the page (which I also experienced) and made some suggestions for additional benefits IF YOU HAD TIME and wanted to. The gift of the plugin is very kind of you, and thank you, however to offer suggestions is not being ungrateful, it is just offering suggestions. It is like Freud said, “sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.”

  55. Brett Rutecky, 23 November, 2015

Hey thanks for the free work .. but if you have time to .. could you do a little more free work for me? Think of it in a different context. The neighbor kid cuts your grass for free, you say.. hey thanks for cutting my grass .. but just a suggestion , if you have time, would you rake the leaves also (for free). Hey Im not ungrateful for you cutting my grass for free, Im only suggesting an improvement. I guess its open for interpretation.

  56. Joe, 24 November, 2015

If the idea of suggestions doesn’t set well with you on a free piece of software, you could always consider the suggestions for an upgraded piece of software that you would sell to your list. I know I would be more than willing to pay for an upgrade with the suggestions Ted has listed.

The point I think you are missing is that we really like the reasoning and rationale behind why you designed and built this software. The suggestions are because you got us thinking about the software and how it would help us take care of a problem by enhancing it. You teach us to consider these thoughts every time you do a review and present us with an approve/buy button at the bottom. You are the one to always tell us to think about how software works and if it will meet our needs or not, the logical extension of this teaching is that we would make suggestions if we think they would help. You taught us how to think this way.

Just so there is no confusion what-so-ever, THANK YOU VERY MUCH for giving the software to us, we appreciate you doing so.

  57. Walt, 23 November, 2015

    Hi Brett

I think you may have been a bit harsh in your reply to Ted. I really didn’t think he was complaining at all and in fact stated…
“Do appreciate the β€œgift”, Brett, no matter what because it is a great idea for scarcity”. I think he was only making a suggestion and not throwing your free gift back in your face.

  58. Michael, 23 November, 2015

    Thanks Brett! Very cool

  59. Michael Rytter, 23 November, 2015

    Thanks Brett
    I am really thankful! πŸ™‚

  60. C.J., 23 November, 2015

And I am thankful for YOU! Happy turkey day, sir! πŸ˜€

  61. patrick, 23 November, 2015

    Thanks Brett!!

pretty impressive too, that at the time I wrote this, there were 120 people viewing your page I guess!

  62. Brett Rutecky, 23 November, 2015

120 is about right for a post late at night on my site, but to be fair the plugin refreshes the count every 3 minutes .. any more ‘live’ than that and it would be to hard on most peoples servers.

  63. Craig, 23 November, 2015

Thanks for your creativity and for your generosity!

Can we put the “banner” on the top of the page? or near the buy button? OTO?

  64. Brett Rutecky, 23 November, 2015

Not on this version, its bottom only.

  65. Mike, 23 November, 2015

    Nice! Very clever indeed!
Thank you so much Brett and a very Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours πŸ™‚

  66. Steve Harrison, 23 November, 2015

Thanks Brett, great idea. Your a gent.

  67. Sara, 23 November, 2015

Thank you for all of the great products

  68. Faithe, 23 November, 2015

Awesome gift! Either it doesn’t work with my theme or it doesn’t show if there is only one person. I get a very thin black line on the bottom of the page, but no text like I see on this one. Just thought I’d let you know.

  69. Brett Rutecky, 23 November, 2015

Sounds like you didnt save the settings.

  70. Vijay, 23 November, 2015

    Hi Brett,

    Thanks very much for this.

This is definitely a much better way of projecting ‘scarcity’
    and making it feel real
than the other ones which most would have got accustomed to,
where the fatigue factor would have set in.

    Happy Thanksgiving to you.

  71. Ully, 23 November, 2015

Hi Brett, thanks for this wonderful tool!

  72. Viv, 23 November, 2015

Thank you, Brett. Looks like a great plugin!

Once again over delivering! Thank you!

  74. franco, 23 November, 2015

    thank you brett, happy holidays!

  75. Roy, 23 November, 2015

Thanks Brett… Another gem to digest for Thanks Giving… You are rough diamond
    but a very generous one.

“Success is not counted by how high you’ve climbed,
but by how many people you brought with you”.

  76. Si Deals, 23 November, 2015

    Hello Brett

Happy Thanks Giving to you & your family. This plugin will be a great way to increase my conversions, so a big thank you for your generosity.
    All the very best,

    Thanks. Very nice!

  78. Patrick, 23 November, 2015

    Hi Brett,
Thank you for this very convinient and engaging plugin.

  79. Steven, 23 November, 2015

Brett…Thank you. it’s an amazing gift.

  80. Amanda Richter, 23 November, 2015

    Wow Brett – Thank you,

What a great and useful Thanksgiving gift! 115 visitors currently viewing your page right now, this could be very addictive for just about anyone with a website both on and off liners…
Who wouldnt be interested to know how many people are viewing their site?

    Best wishes

  81. Ulf, 23 November, 2015

Thank you Brett, you are a generous man indeed.
Is it kinda unethical to think about a function which shows randomly any number of “faked” visitors? Might be not very scary if most of the time visitors are zero – not everyone has a well knwon blog like you πŸ˜‰

  82. Brett Rutecky, 23 November, 2015

I thought about that, (would have been a lot more easy to code as well) but then I decided that it was lying to the site visitors which is not a good thing.

  83. Charles Richard, 23 November, 2015

Wonderful free gift Brett…you’re always think out of the box…

  84. Egor, 23 November, 2015

Actually, only for this site I can’t even get the plugin going… It’s just not working. The color picker is not working. And when I click on Save I get 404 error page not found.. Weird!
I tried to deactivate all other plugins and it didn’t help. I tried to deactivate all the plugins and then to clean install currently-viewing and it still didn’t help.

I have another site built with the same theme and it works there – installs properly and just works.

What do you thinks is the problem Brett?

    Thank you!

  85. Brett Rutecky, 23 November, 2015

Sounds like you changed the name of the plugins .ZIP file before you installed it.

  86. jade Campbell, 23 November, 2015

    Ohhh – Nooo ! I think I just learned something . . .Brett . . g.r.o.a.n
I always use “save as” and add the creators name in front of the plugin or pdf, because I want to know where it came from and whether free or paid, had no idea this may prevent the plugin or software for that matter from working . . .
    Hells Bells!!

Boy am I going to have fun, when I start using them all . . . .

  87. Brett Rutecky, 23 November, 2015

The name of the .zip file becomes the name of the directory on your server where the plugins are saved to WordPress. If you change the name of the .zip file then that could prevent the plugin from finding its own files / path to its files. Broken images are a big indicator that this is happening, because the plugin cant find the images, since the path to them is different than what its expecting.

  88. Egor, 23 November, 2015

No I did’t change anything and as i said if I install the same zip file to other sites tt works. And i also tried to redownload the plugin a couple of times. Same issue…
But this is what I found when I checked plugins using FTP: the plugin for some reasons was named currently_viewing2 for some reasons… I got rid of the “2” and it looks fine now!! πŸ™‚ Thx Brett!!

  89. Douglas, 23 November, 2015

Really generous of you….Thanks, Brett. Simple yet so effective.

  90. Elviira, 23 November, 2015

Awesome! Thank you, Brett, really appreciate this.

Thank you so much Brett .

  95. Scott White, 23 November, 2015

    Hey Brett,
I really appreciate the article and your right you don’t really notice that type of scarcity, but it’s around every corner when you are involved in any type of marketing. Just wanted to put my 2 cents in,but a great read and thank you for sharing. Oh I also linked my blog back to you, hope you get a chance to read the article. Drop me a line and I’ll send you the link.

Brett – Just wanted to tell you Thank You so much for the free scarcity plugin.
    Happy Thanksgiving to you also.

  99. Greg, 23 November, 2015

It would be cool if you could add a little code so that it would show how many people have already bought the offer also, it would be best if you could turn this feature on or off in real time.

How much for white label version?

    Great plugin, Thank you.

  100. Nate Boyd, 23 November, 2015

Really nice of you Brett – enjoy your well deserved vacation too! Thank you!

Thank you very much Brett! I am very happy about your gift! Wish you and your Kids a nice day!

  103. Michael, 23 November, 2015

So many people preach that you should nurture a relationship with your list. But it seems that the ones who preach this the loudest are the ones who spew daily affiliate offers and nothing else.

You, my man, are the exception to this.

Thank you for your generous nature and honesty.

  104. alan Mack, 23 November, 2015

    Thanks Brett

It will come in real handy ! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.:)

  119. Nelson Therrien, 23 November, 2015

    Hi Brett,

Thanks a lot! Good idea as well.

Just a little thought: I don’t know plugin development at all and therefore don’t know if it’s a couple minutes thing or an hard one (I might try to do it myself if you don’t have the time to do it), but here’s a constructive suggestion (of course, that you can use too):
If I look at a page and there are 35 other people watching at the same time, it creates scarcity… but if after 3 days launch (for example), there are no other people watching at the same time, it will do the opposite… SO, what would you think (if it’s possible with a simple if condition) to add the option to display the bar just if we have more than X people at the same time (ex: If there are > 2 people, show it)?

    Thanks again.

  120. Carl Friedman, 23 November, 2015

Thank you, Brett; I look forward to using this plug-in. I’m a new follower of you and it becomes obvious very quickly why you are respected in the IM community.

Thanks Brett, for this Plugin (right now on your ite I can see that I am one of 112 people viewing this right now as I type – awesome!

I really like this as it comes across as more honest – I hate scarcity stuff – but I realise everyone uses it to make people commit at the time.

Love your reviews and am greatly influenced by your comments in these reviews which i believe to be fair in every way to everyone . . .

really impressed – think I better have a goof look around your site!

Bratt – it semms you have stolen Sam Bakker’s thunder a little bit, he is releasing something similar called social pop tomorrow. Were you aware of this release and do you have any words of consolation for Sam for impacting on his launch like this?

  139. Brett Rutecky, 23 November, 2015

Ha, I got a message from Sam.. he says his is better (more powerful) .. so I told him to give me access and prove it πŸ˜› .. Ill let you know what I think after I check it out.

Hey Brett, can you please tell me why are my fonts blurry?
    {link removed}

  147. Brett Rutecky, 23 November, 2015

The plugin uses the font and styling for your website, that is a ‘drop shadow’ that your theme is adding.

Awesome share Brett! Thank you for your generous gift.

Any thoughts on the upcoming product that is being launched in the next few hours (Social Pop). Looks like its based on the same concept of social scarcity.

  166. Merv, 24 November, 2015

    Thanks Brett!

This is a really great plugin and gift. I hope you create or adapt this for a Shopify. This would be a great plugin for scarcity when I’m running special discount for the first 100 only. I think a lot of people would grab this.

  171. Greg, 24 November, 2015

I can save you some time on comparing Sam Bakker’s Social Pop scarcity plugin, to, Brett Rutecky’s, wordpress scarcity plugin.

Bakker’s, plugin will cost you a minimum of $17 bux, and if you are a shiny object kinda guy, it will probably cost a whole lot more by the time you get through the funnel of luv.

Rutecky’s, wordpress scarcity plugin, totally FREE!!!! we give it ***** five stars.

  172. Brett Rutecky, 24 November, 2015

Well to be fair, Sams was designed as a commercial software, mine was not. I actually compared the two myself:

  173. Dave, 24 November, 2015

Brett, went thru your little funnel for the free scarcity plugin. I was already a member of your FB group. But I don’t see the download anywhere.

  187. Brett Rutecky, 14 May, 2016

You should read the very first post, the sticky one, with the big red graphic that says STOP: READ FIRST .. its says that because you should read it first.

  188. Rob, 22 May, 2016

    Hi Brett,

**Many thanks for this excellent plugin!**

For your general info – one thing I have noted [maybe others have already said so]. I’ve got a popular WP pop-up tool called “Stakk” and I think, there is a conflict with it.

I was getting a thin line at the bottom of my screen for my “Currently Viewing” msg and the Stakk close X was not working – I have now switched Stakk OFF and all is working fine!
Would you mind please suggesting – an easy to use – [FREE??] pop-up tool, that I could use as an alternate? Thank you again and best wishes.
