In this post Im taking a look at the new Social Pop cloud based software.

So I had known for a bit that Sam was going to be releasing some kind of new thing. But honestly there are so many launches  that its not possible for me to review them all, so I really did not give SocialPop much though. In truth I kind of judged it originally by its name, which I will admit, is a bit unfair. But I saw the ‘Pop’ in the name SocialPop and was like .. oh yay .. another pop up software, there are only like 4 million of them already out there. I’m not even going to bother.

Then fast forward to the other day when I released my free Currently Viewing WordPress plugin and I get a Skype message from Sam Bakker, telling me he has a similar software coming out soon, only his is better:

1

Now normally I dont review products that compete with mine. Its very hard to be impartial. However I did not sell the Currently Viewing plugin. I don’t intend to sell the currently viewing plugin. So I decided I could review it an be fair. I will admit though, in the back of my mind, there may have been a small part of me (the ego Im sure) that might have been looking forward to showing Sam how my plugin is actually better.

However after testing I found that SocialPop follows the same general concept as the plugin I wrote, but it integrates the concept differently and also frankly is quite a bit more function and flexible.

Let me explain:

First of all this is not a WordPress plugin. Though it comes with a WordPress plugin for easy addition to WordPress sites, being that it is a cloud based system it also comes with embed code. Because this has embed code your not restricted to using it to just a WordPress blog. It can work on any website.

Second is the way it looks. When I wrote my Currently Viewing plugin I created it as a bar that shows on the bottom of the screen. I did this because thats what I wanted for myself. However SocialPop is more of a pop up that shows.

1

Not only can you set the system to show your pop up anywhere on the screen you like, but you can also fully customize the look of it. You can even add your own little icon in the pop up message. This is something I really liked as it ads a bit of branding and personal touch.

Besides being more flexible in its design this system is also more functional. When I wrote my plugin I wrote it specifically to suite the one thing I wanted. To show the number of people currently viewing my blog post. While SocialPop can do this, it can also do a lot of other things as well.

1

While this can also show the number of people currently viewing your page. It can also show the number of people who visited in the last 24 hours. It can show the number of people who bought your product. The number of bonuses that are actually left. The total number of a product that have been sold. In short there are a lot more possibilities and a lot more potential for different types of scarcity. I can see a lot of opportunity to run scarcity campaigns.

For example:

Someone doing real estate or other kind of high end listing could say: X number of people have visited this listing in the last 24 hours

Someone doing an affiliate promo could say: This special bonus is only for the first X number of people, and then show the actual number of people who have bought, or show the actual number of bonuses that are left.

Someone selling their own product could show the number of people currently viewing the page, the number of people who bought in the last hour, or the number of special discount price offers left etc.

These are just a few ideas off the top of my head. What makes this so much more functional is the fact that it does not just track the number visitors, it also tracks bonus conversions and product sales. This opens the door for a lot more possibilities.

The one thing I did not like about this is that the analytics / stat reporting is an up-sell.  Now I understand more costs more and people should be paid more for more features. But I feel that analytics / tracking is kind of a basic function that should be included in the FE price. To be fair my own plugin did not have any tracking at all. But this does have it, and I feel like they are kind of ‘holding back’ a basic functionality that really should not be part of an upgrade.

Now in order to save a bit of my pride I do feel compelled to say that my plugin was never designed to be a commercial product, it was instead designed to suite my specific needs and then I gave it away for free.  So its kind of unfair to compare it to SocialPop which was designed to be a commercial software. However now that I have gotten that obligatory pride saving disclaimer out of the way, I have to admit, Sam was right, his is better. While his software basically uses the same concept for the  type of scarcity as my plugin, it is more functional and more flexible.

Note: Sam is offering this for 50% off to the first 500 people who pick it up. I guarantee you this is going to go very fast. So if your interested in this software, make sure you act quickly so you can get the best price.

A quick note about the reviews I do on this site. The product vendors give me access to their products for free in order for me to do my review. However I make no promises to them regarding the results of my tests or what I will write in my review. Should you click a link that takes you to a sales page for a paid product for sale this link will be an affiliate link and I will be paid a percentage of the sales price should you decide to invest in it.

Gosh, I went to Neil’s webinar and got sold on this.
Later I found your review. At least I am glad that you rated it well.
You need the first up sell to use the popup on external pages and sites
    I gather. Too bad.
I wonder if it can be used with pages from your jackjacker software.

You dont need the upsell to do that. Use my JackJacker plugin along with the embed code that somes with SocialPop and do it for free 🙂 You will need the GOLD version though, but I think you have that version.

After receiving your plugin yesterday I was going to not look at Sam’s product but another marketers bonus got me to check it out. I picked it up and always heave a sigh of relief when it passes your tests and gets your seal of approval. I can see myself using both products depending on my specific need. Thanks Brett and a Happy Thanksgiving to you sir!

Thanks again Brett for the great review and the bonus offer. I purchased the Social Pop only because you told us, it is better than yours. I got your plugin yesterday and I like it. I havent bought the OTO because I feel like it isn’t good to send my offer to sites which I don’t own.

Hey Brett! Thanks again for the awesome review on SocialPop, it really help on my decision making. I have one question, it is possible to use SocialPop and your Plugin on the same website? I’ve already have your plugin and wonder if I can combine the two.

Thanks for the great review! I have your free plugin and it’s in use on several of my sites right now.

Only since you recommended Sam’s product – I will take a long look and will follow your “recommended” link.

Folks, Brett takes time to review products and share his results – good and bad. He is a stand up guy and really “Gets It” – especially with people new to IM.

    Happy Thanksgiving To All!
